Tubuai Lagoon Snorkel (Motu Toena)

23° 20.6′ S · 149° 24.8′ W

Tubuai's lagoon (about 85 km², mostly about 6 m deep and jade-coloured) is ringed by motus; Motu Toena on the NE reef is the classic picnic and snorkel stop, and nearby clam beds are famous.

Practical

Coordinate is the islet (OSM). Tahiti Tourisme suggests a picnic and snorkel at Motu Toena and names Motu Tapapa Tavae as a clam-gathering spot with dozens of giant clams. The eastern lagoon is poorly charted and full of bommies (Chugach), so go by dinghy or with a local boat in good light rather than moving the yacht. Chugach (2020) also rates lagoon snorkelling and drift diving with the dive centre. Lagoon depth reaches 25 m in parts of the SE (Wikipedia).
