Tahanea Pink-Sand Bird Motus ('7')

16° 57.3′ S · 144° 44.4′ W · approximate

Two pink-sand motus just east of the '7' anchorage, busy with nesting boobies and Tuamotu sandpipers. Sailors describe their fluffy white chicks as 'a truly magical experience'.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: set about 0.3 nm east of Sugar Shack's '7' anchorage, at the two motus they describe 'just east of the anchorage'. Sugar Shack (Sept 2019): 'The two motus just east of the anchorage have pink sandy and loads of birds. Be very careful walking around as the sand piper birds nest in the sand, the boobies nest on the ground and trees.' Snorkel between the two motus. Pitufa warns that the 'Number 7' bird motus have become very popular with cruisers and 'now the birds are not safe there either', and asks everyone to consider the birds: stay on the wet sand at the waterline, keep the visit short, and never take dogs ashore, light fires or fly kites. The anchorage is only comfortable in light trades (see Tahanea '7' Anchorage).
