Reinforced Trades (Maramu) Season, Central Tuamotus

16° 37.4′ S · 143° 34.4′ W · approximate

In the austral winter, big highs stalling south of the Tuamotus bring days of 20-25 kt E-ESE 'reinforced trades'. Boats heading east to Raroia or the Marquesas get pinned in an atoll for a week or more.

Practical

Representative point at Pouheva. Soggy Paws (July-Aug 2010): highs from New Zealand stalled well south and produced 20-25 kt E-ENE winds for days; they waited for 36-48 hour calms between systems and motorsailed east in hops (Tahanea, Makemo, then 75 nm to Raroia), then got pinned in Raroia for 10 days. Wind against an ebb in the passes creates standing waves, so plan pass transits around these windows. Cyclone season is November to April (see the area file).
