Motu Nohi Nohi Beginner Dive (Tiputa Pass)

14° 58.3′ S · 147° 37.7′ W · approximate

A shallow sand-and-coral islet at the lagoon end of Tiputa Pass that dive centres use for first dives, with 115 fish species counted in 40 minutes and fish that have lost their fear of people.

Practical

Approx: placed at the lagoon end of the pass, just inside the Tahiti Heritage pass-centre pin (14.97062S 147.62797W); Tahiti Heritage says the motu sits in the middle of the pass at its lagoon end and appears as a simple emerged sandbank. Y Aka Plongee lists it as its 0-6 m discovery site, 'ideal for beginners'. Tahiti Heritage notes that fish feeding and the absence of fishing have built up schools of predators; treat the area as no-take. The motu lost its vegetation in the 1983 cyclone. Glass-bottom boats also use it; the snorkel trail known as the Aquarium is on the same reef. Dinghy access from the Kia Ora anchorage in calm conditions; stay clear of the main pass current.

Best for
