Mohotani Nature Reserve Rules

9° 59.0′ S · 138° 49.8′ W · approximate

Mohotani and its satellite islet Terihi have been a protected nature reserve (Motane Nature Reserve) since 1992 to let the island recover from feral goats and sheep. Treat it as a look-but-don't-land wilderness.

Practical

Position is the island centre (Wikipedia). Wikipedia: protected since 1992 as the Motane Nature Reserve (including Terihi). Feral sheep and goats have stripped the vegetation, and red runoff stains the sea after rain. Archaeological remains of the Moi-a-Tiu clan's settlement survive. A cruiser was told after visiting in 2023 that the island is off-limits but could not confirm it. No published landing or anchoring rules were found in official sources. Assume landing needs written permission from French Polynesia's environment directorate (DIREN); do not land, collect anything, light fires or bring animals ashore. Under the 2026 Marquesas regime, check escales.gov.pf for any anchoring restrictions.
