Makemo July Festival (Heiva)

16° 37.4′ S · 143° 34.2′ W · approximate

In July, Pouheva has hosted a festival with teams from neighbouring islands: palm-frond restaurant stalls by the dock, a Miss Makemo pageant, a sports day, and traditional Polynesian dancing and music.

Practical

Approximate: placed in Pouheva village ashore of the village anchorage (Soggy Paws waypoint 16°37.6S / 143°34.3W) and west of the lighthouse (16°37'14"S / 143°34'08"W, French Wikipedia); the exact building is not geolocated in any source, so walk from the dinghy dock using the directions here. Reported by Ari B (July 2019) in the Soggy Paws compendium; dates vary each year and follow the territory-wide Heiva season. Ask at the mairie for this year's program. The anchorage fills and the quay is busy with inter-island boats. Hamble Warrior (July 2023): on July 14 the town hall raised the flags and the afternoon was a holiday; the local dance troupe had placed second at the Heiva in Tahiti, and the passenger ship carried the troupe and islanders to Papeete for the celebrations.
