16° 3.9′ S · 145° 37.2′ W
Fakarava is the pilot atoll for French Polynesia's regulated anchoring areas: five zones with boat quotas and time limits, and overnight spots booked online in advance.
Practical
Zones for boats under 20 m: Pufana at the north pass (5 boats, 48 hours), Airport (5 boats, 48 hours), Rotoava 1 North (6 boats, 48 hours), Rotoava 1 South (14 boats, 7 days), Hirifa (10 boats, 48 hours) and Tetamanu at the south pass (10 boats, 48 hours). Rotoava 2 takes 5 yachts of 15-25 m for up to 7 days, and three single-ship points (Rotoava 3, Rotoava 4, Papahonu) take vessels of 20-90 m. Book overnight (4 pm to 9 am) at escales.gov.pf, by email to escales.dpam@administration.gov.pf, or by phone to DPAM at +689 40 54 45 78 (24/7). The service was free during the 2025 pilot, with fees announced for 2026. Earlier Noonsite text gave an atoll-wide cap of 52 yachts. When the quotas are full, the brief invites you to visit Toau (15 NM) or Kauehi (31 NM). The tourism office on the Rotoava quay hands out the anchorage chart and sailors' briefing. The coordinate is the Rotoava 1 South zone centre.
