The colonial capital of Oaxaca state, 277 km inland over the Sierra Madre del Sur: markets, mezcal, Zapotec ruins at Monte Albán and weaving villages such as Teotitlán del Valle. Huatulco cruisers often leave the boat in a slip and ride the bus up.

Roads Less Traveled took the bus from Huatulco with the boat in a slip (2012) and described the road as a long, eight-hour mountain drive at the time; a newer highway to the coast opened in 2024. Puerto Escondido's airport also has flights to Oaxaca City. Leave the boat in a marina or with someone aboard, not at anchor.
