Spanish Wells lobster fleet and crawfish season

25° 32.5′ N · 76° 45.0′ W · approximate

Spanish Wells is the lobster capital of the Bahamas: its fleet of big 'smack' boats and dinghy crews harvests wild spiny lobster ('crawfish') for export, and the harbour fills and empties with the season.

Practical

Coordinate approx: set mid-harbour among the fishing-fleet docks on the north side. Divers work roughly August to March (eleuthera-map.com), so the harbour is busiest with departing and returning boats then; out of season the fleet is in and berths are tight. Expect fast fishing-boat and ferry traffic in the harbour and entrances. Cruisers who want to take lobster need a Bahamas fishing permit ($100 under 50 ft, $300 50 ft and over, valid 30 days only, per ABM 2026) and must follow the closed season and size/bag limits — confirm current rules with the Department of Marine Resources. Fresh lobster is sometimes sold at the docks in season (verify).
