Johns Hopkins Inlet (Glacier Bay)

58° 52.7′ N · 137° 3.4′ W

Johns Hopkins Inlet is a side fjord of Glacier Bay ending at Johns Hopkins Glacier, where harbor seals pup on the ice. It has seasonal closures for the seals, and its ice makes for slow going.

Practical

Coordinate is the USGS place-name (GNIS) position for the inlet, via OSM. May 1 to June 30: closed to all vessel traffic from the glacier face to an imaginary line due west from Jaw Point. July 1 to August 31: all vessels must stay more than a quarter nautical mile from seals on ice (except where safe navigation requires), at no more than 10 knots. A summer permit is required to be in the bay at all, and the half-mile glacier standoff advised elsewhere in Alaska (NPS Kenai Fjords) is a sensible floor for a small boat. Check with the Visitor Information Station for current closures.
