Tabor Canyon Hike

25° 48.4′ N · 111° 19.5′ W · approximate

A boulder-hopping scramble up a dry riverbed into the Sierra de la Giganta behind Puerto Escondido—sometimes called Steinbeck's Canyon—to a series of pools.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: near the canyon mouth west of the highway at Tripuí (Sierra Tabor per GeoNames is at 25.79611, -111.36778); the trailhead is not mapped. Challenging in parts; depending on the season the pools may be dry (Practical Sailor). Start early, carry plenty of water, and do not go if storms threaten—the canyon is a flash-flood route. Popular way to spend a norther day while sheltering in Puerto Escondido (Latitude 38).

Best for
